and the dependent variable. Parametric tests measure the hypotheses - "a specific statement of prediction" (Trochim, 2006) - inasmuch as they assess the value of a population parameter. To begin, there needs to be a hypothesis about the value of a parameter, which, in this case, would be the null hypothesis. This null hypothesis specifies that the value of a parameter interest is equal to some value. The strength of such a test would be to determine whether or not the evidence provided by the sample would suffice to establish that the null hypothesis is not true. If there were enough such evidence, then there would be evidence to support the alternative hypothesis (Trochim, 2006). There are three possible forms of the alternative hypothesis: determining whether or not the parameter is not equal to the value of the parameter specified by the null hypothesis; determining whether or not the sample data would allow one to conclude that the parameter exceeds a value; and determining whether or not the sample data allow one to conclude that the parameter is less than the value (Pinto et al, 2003). Some of the sampling methods that can be used include simple random sampling (equal population), stratified random sampling (several definite non-overlapping subsets of target population) and cluster sampling (widely dispersed populations). The iterative approach is used by the researcher as a means by which to alter the research methods and the hypothesis as the study progresses, in the light of information gleaned along the way, an aspect employed primarily by qualitative researchers. This method shows a commendable sensitivity to the richness and variability of the subject matter. Failure to recognize the legitimacy ...
