An 8 page research paper that investigates hypothermia in surgical patients in an attempt to answer the question as to whether or not gender is a factor. Hypothermia is closely related to morbidity both during and after surgery and even mild hypothermia has been associated with increased wound infection and increased whole-body oxygen-demand increase during recovery (Buhre and Rossaint, 2003). Therefore, considering the significance of perioperative hypothermia, this literature review examines the research question as to whether or not gender is a contributing factor to hypothermia development in surgical patients. narrow range, 36.4 degrees to 37.3 degrees Celsius or 97.5 degrees to 99.1 degrees Fahrenheit (Nicoll, 2002). Core body temperature is defined as the blood temperature of the central circulatory
system (that is, heart, lung, brainstem, etc.) which can be measured reliably at the "pulmonary artery, esophagus, or tympanic membrane" (Panagiotis, et al, 2005). Body temperature is controlled in the
hypothalamus whose preoptic area receives data concerning the relative loss of gain of heat within the body (Nicoll, 2002). Gradients refers to sensed deviation between the set point level of
the body and real levels of body temperature (Nicoll, 2002). When the hypothalamus senses a gradient, signals are sent throughout the body that initiate wither warming or cooling responses
to correct these deviations (Nicoll, 2002). If the hypothalamus senses that the body is too cold, the first autonomic response is vasoconstriction, which shunts blood away from superficial capillary beds,
which decreases heat loss from the bodys surface (Nicoll, 2002). This conserves heat without expending energy and helps to ensure sufficient blood flow to major organs. However, if vasoconstriction is
