the basis or foundation for something.2 Greek philosophers used the word "denote reality as distinguished from appearances."3 The word hypostasis was used synonymously with the word ousia prior to the Council of Nicaea.4 In fact, St. Augustine said he saw no difference in the meanings of these two words.5 By the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the incarnation of Christ as having two natures was established and since, referred to as the hypostatic union.6 Christ possessed two separate natures, that which was divine and that which was human.7 He was not half divine and half human, He was both encompassed in one person.8 Jesus was born to Mary as a vulnerable human infant who had all the needs of any other infant and growing child. As one author phrased it: Jesus two natures are not mixed together, nor are they combined into a new God-man nature. They are separate yet act as a unit in the one person of Jesus.9 Jesus was not simply a human person who had divinity within Him; He was divine.10 This is a very difficult concept to grasp and even more difficult to explain with our finite minds but Jesus was both God and man, separate natures but altogether in one person.11 This is a core belief of Christianity that one can find on any Christian Church Web site, regardless of whether that organization is a mainline Christian denomination or an evangelical church. The differences between the approaches to core beliefs are found mostly in how each denomination perceives Scripture.
