Hypnosis is sometimes regarded more as a parlor trick than as an effective approach to influencing human behavior and health.
The technique does, however, have value in these applications. It is utilized both in psychology and in medicine. In many ways the
state of being elicited by hypnosis would be most accurately described as a trance which results in an enhanced state of consciousness and an increased receptivity to new ideas and
ways of viewing the world. In Western society we have used hypnosis only sporadically and it is often associated with considerable skepticism. Today, however, more and more medical
disciplines are recognizing it as a valid technique. Suggestions in the hypnotic state can come from either the patient themselves or from the
therapist. It is the suggestive aspect of hypnosis which separates it from therapeutic interventions such as relaxation therapy or guided imagery.
Milton H. Erickson was, without a doubt, the worlds foremost authority in medical hypnosis. Born December 5, 1901, Erickson would be stricken with polio at age seventeen (Erickson
and Rossi, 2009). He would begin the development of what would become known as his hypnotic theory while trying to treat his own physical impairments (Erickson and Rossi, 2009).
