We now know that hypertension is caused by a variety of factors ranging from genetic predisposition to diet and other lifestyle choices. The disease is referred to as the
silent killer. Many that suffer from the disease are undiagnosed and untreated. This can lead to death. This is particularly unfortunate give how much has changed over
the decades in regard to what we know about hypertension, diagnosing it, its effects, and means through which it can be treated. While in many cases hypertension cannot be
cured, in many others it can be prevented or at least treated to keep it in check when it does develop. Drugs are an important part of treatment but
the implementation of a good diet and an active lifestyle are incredibly important as well in treating and even preventing this potentially life threatening disease.
Defining Hypertension Defined as a systolic blood pressure of 140 mm Hg or greater and a diastolic blood
pressure of 90 mm HG or greater, hypertension can have a number of serious pathophysiological impacts (1). While the early stages of the condition are relative innocuous, hypertension which
is untreated over longer periods of time can irreversibly damage not only the heart but the peripheral blood vessels and numerous other organs. Renal damage is of particular concern.
