known as high blood pressure, is a complicated disease that has its origins in both genetic and behavioral factors (Covelli, 2007). "Ethnicity, family history of hypertension (FHH), diet, inactivity, pre-hypertensive
blood pressures and stress" have been identified as the principal risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease (Covelli, 2007, p. 323). This examination of hypertension presents a proposed nursing intervention that
consists of an educational program designed to address the needs of African Americans. This introductory section, first of all, details the risk factors that affect the incidence of hypertension
among African Americans prior to outlining the parameters of the proposed program. Ethnicity: Simply being African American is regarded as a risk factor for hypertension due to inherited traits
such as the tendency to develop "physiological alterations to renal sodium excretion, cell membrane transport, sympathetic response to neurogenic and variation in autonomic tone" (Covelli, 2007, p. 323). Family
History of Hypertension (FHH): Even children who have a FHH have been found to have hypertension (Covelli, 2007). In a 2004 study conducted by Rodriguez and Penneni, it was revealed
that adults, ages 18 and above, with FHH had "elevated sodium loading, total peripheral resistance and norepinephrine responses to extended stressors," and also demonstrated "greater systolic and diastolic pressure changes
in response to cognitive and physiological challenge" (Covelli, 2007, p. 323). Diet: Both the intake of dietary sodium and potassium have an effect on blood pressure and salt sensitivity,
in particular, has been sown to cause changes in vascular volume and blood pressure regulation (Covelli, 2007). In African American adolescents, salt sensitivity is a common factor and occurs when
potassium in the diet is even slightly deficient (Covelli, 2007). Research shows that African American teens do not generally eat the recommended number of fruit or vegetable servings for a
