less than half have their blood pressure (BP) under control (Woods 36). The author then lists the medical repercussions of uncontrolled hypertension, emphasizing the fact that this silent disease
may not present signs or symptoms to alert the patient to the presence of a problem. Woods then relates how the advise offered for care in the remaining of the
article is drawn from the latest guidelines of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC 7) (Woods 36). The first section
of the article summarizes new information from the JNC and begins with a definition of what constitutes high blood pressure. This describes the formulation of a new category for
risk, prehypertensive, which identifies patients considered at risk for developing hypertension. The writer then describes how hypertension falls into two main categories, primary (also known a essential) and secondary. These
