an opioid. Like its cousins, opium, heroin, morphine, codeine, and oxycodone; hydrocodone is derived from the opium poppy (Tunnell, 2005). It act on the opioid receptors of the
brain and the spinal cord as well as on tissue itself (Tunnell, 2005). Oxycodone is found as a major component of several brand-name drugs like Lortab, Lorcet, and Vicodin.
Hydrocodone is not only one of the most effective pain medications in the pharmaceutical arsenal, it is also one of the most higly abused drugs in the nation (Sipkoff,
2004). Schedule II drugs include those drugs that, although they are highly addictive, are approved for medical usage under the Controlled
Substances Act (Tunnell, 2005). In its pure form hydrocodone is a Schedule II drug. Often, however, hydrocodone is mixed with other drugs so that its benefits can be
utilized without relying one-hundred percent on hydrocodone itself. These mixtures are not currently classified as Schedule II drugs because hydrocodone is included only as a percentage of the drugs
makeup (Sipkoff, 2004). Instead, they are classified as Schedule III drugs, drugs that by law require considerably less regulatory oversight (Sipkoff, 2004). Schedule II drugs, in comparison are
not allowed to be refilled and: "are not allowed to call in Rxs, pharmacists must
complete a substantial amount of paperwork when ordering and dispensing, and such drugs must be kept in a safe" (Sipkoff, 2004, 38).
