Benjamin, after voicing his appreciation of Ronnies skill, asks him for directions to Chinatown and this ignites Ronnies rage and he goes off in a tirade against Benjamin. Examination of the play identifies the cause of this chronic tension, revealing that the thematic content of the play focuses on how identity is tied to cultural inheritance. Ronnie calls Benjamin a "trailer-park refugee" and a "fucking moron" because he is filled with rage that a white man would have the audacity to ask him directions to Chinatown based on his appearance, which suggests Asian ancestry (Hwang 287). Rather than being offended, Benjamin launches into a speech that identifies Ronnie as "Brother," indicating that he understands his anger at the suggestion of identification based on stereotypes (Hwang 287). Ronnie is totally confused at this point and want to know where Benjamin acquired his knowledge of Asian American history. However, he finds Benjamins explanation that he took Asian-American studies in college in Madison, Wisconsin in order to find out about his roots to be more confusing than illuminating and finally voices his main question, which is: "...did they bother to teach you that in order to find your Asian roots, it a good idea to first be Asian?" (Hwang 289). Benjamin then explains that he was adopted by Chinese-American parents at birth. It is interesting that throughout Ronnies tirade and his use of abusive language directed at Benjamin, Ronnie draws consistently on the stereotypes that he holds about whites, as he makes repeated references to Benjamin that identify him with the South, rather than the Midwest. For example, Ronnie says, "Why dont you go back home and race bullfrogs, or what it is you do for--?" (Hwang 287). ...
