show. This was not a unique period of history, looking at the 1990s there is still a major cross over between art and fashion. One of these designers is Hussein
Chalayan, an unusual designer who has made tables and chairs into clothing, and demonstrates very clearly the cross over between art and fashion. The concept of fashion is well
understood, it is clothing of all types and the way it is designed. However, it we are to argue that Hussein Chalayan is a demonstration of the cross over between
art and fashion we also have to define art. Art covers a very wide range of forms and presentations. An all encompassing definition is "The conscious production or arrangement of
sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium" (Dictionary.com, 2004).
This covers almost every aspect of art we can think of from paintings and poetry to dance and music. Fashion itself has a small area of this, with the arrangement
of colours and textures. However, we are arguing that the cross over may be greater than fashion merely being a subcategory of art. IN looking for this cross over we
are considering how these other non fashion categories of art may be seen within and influencing the fashion designs of Hussein Chalayan. The first indicator of this wider perspective can
