dissipates and becomes a storm it only increases in its intensity. This is what makes them generally so frightening for one never knows if a hurricane will grow mightier, resulting
in a similar situation to hurricane Katrina, or dwindle to a relatively simple tropical storm. The following paper examines hurricanes and the nature of hurricanes. Hurricanes
In many ways a hurricane is nothing more than a very serious storm but it is also a storm that takes on its own distinctive
form. "It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong winds spiraling inward and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph. Each hurricane usually lasts for over
a week, moving 10-20 miles per hour over the open ocean" What is a hurricane?, 2008). This is why they are so dangerous in relationship to coastal regions for the
hurricane will ultimately dwindle once it hits the shore. In relationship to how they form it is noted that they can really
only form over the ocean and only over warm oceans that are 80 degrees (F) or higher (What is a hurricane?, 2008). In addition, the air above must be in
a state where it cools very quickly as one gets higher (What is a hurricane?, 2008). "Also, the wind must be blowing in the same direction and at the same
speed to force air upward from the ocean surface" (What is a hurricane?, 2008). As can be seen there is a certain level of complexity to the formation of a
hurricane and when all the elements are just right that hurricane will only increase in power and potentially damaging capability. Another author illustrates that, "Hurricanes start life as a
