One of the strongest and deadliest hurricanes in American history, Hurricane Katrina stormed threw the Gulf Coast in 2005 killing thousands and leaving millions, mostly in
New Orleans and surrounding areas, without homes. Forming in the Bahamas in late August, Hurricane Katrina crossed southern Florida in what was categorized as a Category 1 Hurricane. A few
deaths were reported along with some heavy flooding. The storm began gaining strength as it approached the southwest Florida and the Gulf of Mexico. The outskirts of the Hurricane reached
all the way to southeast Texas and affected nearly everyone within a 100-mile radius of the Gulf Coast. In New Orleans, Louisiana, the storms flooded the citys levee system, causing
waters levels to rise to emergency levels across most of the city. Estimates suggest that nearly 80 percent of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded. The
levee failures prompted investigators to reassess the design and infrastructure of the citys flood system and how New Orleans and the state of Louisiana can prevent another catastrophe like this
