this story there are subtle innuendoes aimed at him by the other two hunters, and he is essentially dismissed and ignored in many respects. It is a story that is
about much more than Tub, for it is a story about denial and the coldness of humanity, but it is also a story wherein Tub is the focus and perhaps
embodies the theme of the story concerning the coldness of humanity and human denial. The following paper analyzes the character of Tub and how others treat him. Hunters
in the Snow by Tobias Wolff One of the first indications that the reader receives in relationship to Tub, and his physical appearance, aside from his name, comes when one
of the characters, Kenny, states, " He looks just like a beach ball with a hat on" (Wolff). At this point the reader simply may assume that this comment is
made because it is cold outside and he is bundled up and in all honesty many people dressed in layers of clothing may look like this. But, this is the
first hint of his overweight condition and the way his "friends" treat him. The next indicator of Tub and his physical condition comes when the narrator states, "Tub had
trouble getting through the fences. Frank and Kenny could have helped him; they could have lifted up on the top wire and stepped on the bottom wire, but they didnt.
They stood and watched him" (Wolff). In this one begins to wonder if he is overweight and this is clearly the case. His "friends" clearly just watch him and yet
the reader thinks that perhaps, with Tub as a grown man, and these being men who go out in the wilderness and hunt, that Tub should not expect any help.
