of modern times. Born in Louisville Kentucky in the early half of the twentieth century, Thompson was destined to a life of mystery and controversy. Even the actual
date of his birth is a mystery. Some sources give the date as July 18, 1937 and others give it as July 18, 1939 (Medenhall, 2004). Other sources,
either indirectly or directly cite both dates (Medenhall, 2004). Thompson himself apparently would prefer to keep the mystery alive. Two of his most popular books, "Hells Angels" and
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas : A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" reveal many of the darker corners of Thompsons life. At the heart
of each of these corners is an infatuation with drugs, alcohol and living on the edge of mainstream society. Thompsons early life was
not without certain obstacles. His father died while Thompson was in his teens (Medenhall, 2004). His mother raised him an his brothers. Despite these challenges, Thompson evidenced
much talent even at an early age. He appeared to be heading for a career in sports but this direction would be permanently altered when Thompson ran afoul of
the law (Medenhall, 2004). A series of arrest would eventually land him in jail pulling a sixty day sentence (Medenhall, 2004).
Even though he only served thirty days of that sentence prior to being released, his schooling would be interrupted (Medenhall, 2004). Instead of graduating with his class,
Thompson joined the Air Force (Medenhall, 2004). Within the year he had his diploma in hand (Medenhall, 2004). Determined to complete his schooling he had pursued high
