There is ironic humor and straight forward humor. There is dark humor and childish humor. With that in mind the following paper first examines Mark Twains Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog and then Donald Barthelmes Me and Miss Mandible as they utilize humor. The paper then discusses the two together. Humor in Twains Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog Mark Twain was very well known for his humor. It was often a dry humor, sometimes clear political and social humor, but generally always sort of a satirical humor. In many subtle ways he poked fun at certain types of people but at the same time his humor was just simply that, humor. In his short story of Jim Smiley there is no real agenda, no real message in the humor that pokes fun at a man who loves to tell stories and especially stories about Jim Smiley. It is simply a funny story that offers ridiculous and almost impossible realities. The story begins with Twain speaking of how a friend of his asked Twain to inquire about a man he knew. Twain immediately presents the reader with the fact that he believes this particular individual may not even be real, offering the reader a very funny joke if it is true: "I have a lurking suspicion that Leonidas W. Smiley is a myth; that my friend never knew such a personage; and that he only conjectured that, if I asked old Wheeler about him, it would remind him of his infamous Jim Smiley, and he would go to work and bore me nearly to death ...
