than just superfluous expression. Laughter does have psychological and sociological undertones. In looking at this complex subject the theories of Freud, Koestler, Bergson, Bateson and Davis come up. Davis, for
example, looks at the notion of humor in cultural and social context as opposed to linking it with psychological undercurrents (Davis PG). Freud sees it from a very different perspective.
It should also be noted that writers throughout the ages have used humor to convey thoughts. Baker suggests that having a sense of humor during hard times is a key
trait that is found in many high achievers (Baker 13). One can imagine that people who take everything seriously will have added stress. Laughing in the face of fear,
or during difficult situations, will likely help one physically as well as psychologically. Aside from the complex theories involving laughter, it is common sense that laughing makes one feel better
