4-2). Authors note that when going through the day, one comes across a variety of types of humor and that in each instance where a different type of humor is
stumbled upon, these are each structured formats for humor, or at least very specific types possessing different styles (4-3). The observation may seem unreasonable, or too complicated. Many people
think of humor as largely spontaneous or at least not very important. They do not see humor as serving a purpose, but nothing could be further from the truth. In
order to examine why humor differs and what purposes it serves, several theories should be examined. How do the theorists explain different types of humor? A look
at insights from Freud, Koestler, Bergson, and Davis will help to shed light on this matter. Many theorists do find that dividing humor categorically helps to explain it. For example,
one can divide it into sections such as verbal humor, ideational quality, existential qualities, and physical humor (Patterson and Aldrich 4-4). Other typologies use broader spectrums, one of which
the author describes as being broken down into eleven categories which are anecdotal, satire, sarcasm, invective, sardonic, irony, self-deprecatory, parody, slapstick, farce and wit (4-6 - 4-11). Each one does
seem to suggest different abilities of the observer. For example, many are acquainted with physical humor and find that children very frequently laugh at that type, whereas verbal humor has
