way of looking at it, but philosophers see freedom as quite a unique thing. Freedom to some is what is opposed to determinism. In other words, do people have free
will or is everything laid out for them in a grand plan? Does human action and interaction matter, or will destiny make sure that whatever is supposed to happen, will?
The idea that there is freedom was conveyed in the film Sliding Doors, where one simple act of catching a train would determine ones future course. Yet, other ideas concerning
freedom in respect to political ideation and freedom of speech and so forth are conveyed all the time. The idea that free will and determinism are one in the same
is rare, but it seems that Hume to some extent possessed such a view, also termed compatibilism. Compatibilism is the view that "we are sometimes free and morally responsible even
though all events are causally determined" (Honderich 144). Is casual determination and freedom compatible? Much of Humes contemplation on this matter of determinism concerns the cause and effect relationship.
Hume once noted that people have no reason to believe that the sun will arise tomorrow (Honderich 378). One would think that this is a ludicrous statement because if the
sun did not rise, there would be no life as human beings need the sun in order for them to live. Hence, many people erroneously believe that it is reasonable
to contend that the sun will rise tomorrow. They feel not only is the sun necessary--even though that is not a valid reason for its arrival each day--but also that
it always has risen each day. Is that reasonable? If someone gets up each day and brushes his teeth, one might bet money on the fact that he will do
