do not understand. This story discusses what it means to be human, in the context of the novel. Discussion The story of the scientist who creates a creature out of
body parts only to end up hating and fearing it has moved readers for almost 200 years. Oddly, we dont tend to identify much with Dr. Frankenstein himself; rather, we
tend to make a real emotional connection with the "monster," hideous as he is, because he is so very human. He knows himself for what he is: an artificial construct
of hideous appearance, and he knows that because of his physicality, he will never be accepted by society. (He is reminiscent of another tragically disfigured man, the Phantom of the
Opera.) Like the Phantom, the Creature is intelligent and has a sense of beauty and goodness, but the treatment he receives at the hands of others enrages him and
turns him into a brute. Its apparent from the first that the Creature is an innocent: he is Frankensteins creation and as such, had every right to expect that the
doctor would take care of him, defend him and perhaps even teach him. Certainly its not strange that the Creature expect Frankenstein, who is his "father," to love him. Or
if not love, to have some sort of regard for him. But Frankenstein, who is not as admirable in the book as he is usually made to appear in film,
turns against his creation the moment he brings it to life: "The different accidents of life are not so changeable as the feelings of human nature. I had worked hard
for nearly two years, for the sole purpose of infusing life into an inanimate body ... but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless
