and demands a different approach. This paper considers humanism, and why it is considered the most important philosophy in adult basic education. Discussion The reason it is necessary to treat
adult learners differently should be intuitively obvious: these are adults-they may be highly successful and well-established in their careers, and they do not have the time or inclination to go
back to the old classroom model of sitting and listening to a lecture. Many of them are business or community leaders, used to entering fully into a discussion, or even
leading it. They will not enjoy the experience or learn much if they are treated like second graders. But finding the appropriate teaching method for this group is not simple
and conflicts still abound among educators about the best way to reach them. One source suggests that although "major adult education research journals" and educational conferences emphasize "critical theory and
postmodernism," in practice adult education emphasizes "personal development programs" or "the incorporation of human capital perspectives into learning at the workplace" (Brookfield, 2002, p. 96). That is, critical theory is
endorsed, but personal development is practiced; Brookfield wonders why the contradiction exists, and finds his answer in the texts themselves. Talking with adult learners "who have dismissed the critical tradition
