religious beliefs or centre ion a deity. Humanism is often seen as a new believe foundation, in line with more modern ideas, however, it has its foundation much further back
in history and as such may be seen as developing in similar ways to other beliefs. Humanism can be defined as "A system of thought that centers on humans
and their values, capacities, and worth" (Dictionary.com, 2003), and has its foundation in Ancient Greece (Kurtz, 1979). The earliest records of humanist though dates back to 600 BCE (before common
era), where the Greek scholars are seen to be questioning the meaning of life. Protagoras was a humanist and is well known for writing that man was the
measure of all things (Knight et al, 1995). However, these were only minority thoughts, there were the majority of thinkers looking to
the gods and the way in which human affairs may be influenced by these beliefs. Epicures ( 342 - 270 BCE) was also a humanist and describes the thoughts as
understanding the death is nothing but a depravation of the senses. Humanism lasted for many years, but started to become less open
during the dark ages. It was at this time that the Christian church took control. The political control was also emphasises with the way that people were treated, withholding the
texts, keeping services Latin and having few people able to read meant that the control could be maintained as there was little offered by way of keeping control. Fear
was also used, with the fear of what would happen if they did not follow the right behaviours and suffering was endured with the promise of a better life later.
