In Dantes "The Inferno" we are provided with a powerful look at the values placed on morality during the time. In "The Epic of Gilgamesh" we are, perhaps, given a more common look at what society was in terms of values rather than given an examination of what it should be in a perfect state of morality. Bearing these simple illustrations in mind we present the following paper which discusses the two stories independently as they present human values. The paper then discusses how the two are very different in their definitions of human values. The Inferno Dantes story is clearly a tale that involves a great deal of religious sentiment. It is a tale that seeks to uncover all the deadly sins of mankind, and illustrate that morality that should be in existence in the state of man. If man, according to the story, is to rise above the carnal existence of animals, then he must be incredibly virtuous and avoid all temptation and all base emotions. In better understanding some of the specifics involving human value we first look at the divisions Dante placed within the Inferno. "In Dantes Inferno, there is an Upper Hell and a Lower Hell. Upper Hell is the place for those guilty of excessive self-indulgence" (Anonymous Dante Alighieri dante.htm). The people placed here are, in many ways, perhaps average individuals who have not risen spiritually above simple needs. For example, "These are people who on earth loved too well and not wisely. Perhaps they loved other persons or material goods (avarice-- misers and spendthrifts); maybe their love was food or drink (gluttony) or even their own aggressive impulses (anger)" ...
