In these respects it is a play that speaks of life in many ways. The following paper examines and analyzes the element of human tragedy in ONeils play. Human Tragedy in Eugene ONeils A Moon for the Misbegotten The primary characters who undergo the most powerful sense of human tragedy are Jamie and Josie. They are both lost individuals who long for love and the kinder things in life, yet they are also dysfunctional and frightened people who can never truly allow themselves to find or believe in any kind of happiness. They are very much kindred spirits, soul mates it would seem, yet happiness will not belong to them for they cannot ultimately cross that line that allows them to give in to the possibility of happiness in love. The character of Josie is one that is incredibly powerful in many respects. It is her complexity that seems to truly lend itself further to the tragedy as well. She is quite normal in many ways, perhaps overly normal and this speaks to all people who are not gifted with some special gift or special beauty. Most people have something about them that is not quite pretty or handsome. Most people have clear strengths and weaknesses in the eyes of a society, although the weaknesses are seen more often than the strengths. It is in ONeils illustration/description of her that one can really see this normalcy, but also an incredible uniqueness that is beautiful in the way ONeil describes her: "Josie is...oversize for a woman that she is almost a freak-five feet eleven in her stockings and weighs around one hundred ...
