scope of this area of civil life within this city. Amy-Leigh Mack, a Charlotte software support engineer and mother of two, was inspired to start a volunteer effort
known as the School Tools campaign when she read a story in the newspaper of a child who had never owned an untouched box of crayons. School Tools kicked off
its 11th annual drive in 2007, collecting donated supplies and distributing them to needy students throughout a 22-county area in central North Carolina (Kelley, 2007). Donations consist of "crayons, pencils,
paper, binders, folders, (and) calculators"-everything that a student needs but that poor families have difficulty providing (Kelley, 2007). Another program that is designed to aid the lives of
children from poor families in the Charlotte area is Operation School Bell, which is undertaken each year by the Assistance League of Charlotte. The goal of this program is to
identify and provide new school clothes to the children identified as having the greatest need. In general, the program clothes around 17,500 children and provides in excess of 14,600 books
(Curtis, 2007). The League also runs four other philanthropic programs, which try to provide what these children need, "from tutoring to snacks" (Curtis, 2007). Human services in Charlotte cover
a broad scope. As the above examples illustrate, many of these services focus on the needs of the poor, homeless and children. However, there are also human services that address
