drawn from current scholarly literature. Introduction Numerous areas of human services are affected by the global HIV/AIDS pandemic. While this situation has many aspects, none is more tragic than
the fact that AIDS has robbed millions of African children of their parents, and many of these children are themselves invested with the HIV/AIDS virus. Attending to the human service
needs of these children presents a monumental crisis that requires the attention not of only at the community level, but also national and internationally. History of the problem In
sub-Saharan Africa, the number of AIDS orphans has reached desperate proportions (Roby and Shaw, 2006). In a region plagued by "civil war, poverty and disease," 12.3 million children have lost
a parent, or both parents, to AIDS and it is estimated that the number of orphans will reach 18.4 million by 2010 (Roby and Shaw, 2006). Meier (2003) points out
that, due to the nature of the HIV/AIDS infection, if one parents dies of AIDS, the chances of losing the second parent to AIDS is greatly increased. Twenty-five million people
