the American people must search actively for human right abuses in the world for the media has a tendency to never really inform the citizens unless the United States is directly threatened or involved. Most people are, therefore, unaware of human rights issues that take place around the globe on a daily basis. In the region of Chechnya the Russians have been violating the human rights of the Chechen since at least 1944. The following paper examines the violations of human rights in Chechnya since 1944. Chechnya In the late 18th century Russia began establishing military residence in Chechnya (The Committee on Conscience [2], 2004). Throughout the 19th century and into the 20th the Chechens attempted to fight back now and then. This led to Josef Stalin deporting them, all of them, to Central Asia and Siberia in 1944 (The Committee on Conscience [2], 2004). "The deportation exacted a heavy toll -- as many as three out of every ten Chechens died during the transport, resettlement, and first years of exile" (The Committee on Conscience [2], 2004). This was the true first violation of the Chechens human rights. And, it was not until 1957 that they were allowed to return to their homeland (The Committee on Conscience [2], 2004). Their return was due to the fact that Stalin had died in 1953 and the "deportees were repatriated in 1956, and the republic was reestablished in 1957" (Shah, 2004). Not much is heard of the struggles until the early 90s when the Soviet Union crumbled. With the demise of the former Soviet Union the Chechen leaders began making claims for their independence.
