Discussion Human rights have been under discussion "at least since the time of King John of England" (A short history of the human rights movement, 1997; hereafter "A short history, 1997"). King John violated so many of the laws and customs of England that he was finally forced to sign the Magna Carta, which "enumerates a number of what later came to be thought of as human rights" (A short history, 1997). Among the rights guaranteed at that time were the right of free citizens to "own and inherit property"; the right of due process; and the right to be equal before the law (A short history, 1997). Later in human history the emphasis shifted. The 19th century saw issues such as slavery, child labor, the massacre of Native Americans, and starvation wages take center stage (A short history, 1997). In the late 19th and part of the 20th century, human rights became died to politics and religion, which alienated some people; however, many human rights movements came into being at the time, including the efforts of organized labor to secure decent wages and the right to strike; the outlawing of child labor; and the establishment of the 40 hour week (A short history, 1997). The womens movement won women the right to vote and national liberation efforts in many countries drove out colonizing powers and freed the indigenous population; the prime example here is India, which followed Gandhis non-violent example and drove out the most powerful empire on earth (A short history, 1997).
