environment for them. HUMAN CAPITAL For years companies have done studies on efficiency, equipment and other ideas in order to get the most value for their dollar. They
finally understand that if they take care of the employees, their human capital, it is that endeavor which will make the biggest improvement in the bottom-line. While it
is admirable these corporations understand the importance of their human workforce, how they deal with this priority is another matter. Interestingly enough, different companies have different methods of dealing
with their human capital and it is interesting to note the different results that are achieved. The great Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has found that by lowering the number of
hours employees work each year, it can improve their human capital. These employees went from 2,111 hours in 1988 to 1,904 hours in 1994. By including proper rest
in their lifestyles they are promoting good health, resulting in fewer sick days taken from work. While the Japanese were formerly known for their six-day work weeks, they have
found that by cutting back hours they are saving a significant amount of money. Mitsubishi has discovered what has been a well-known fact for some time: that well-rested employees
are more efficient than ones who are tired and stressed. In fact, posters on display in the factories read, "Lets become masters at refreshing ourselves" (Anonymous 16). However,
karoshi - literally working to death - is still estimated to take 10,000 lives per year (Anonymous 16). In contrast the United States has not performed any such studies,
