Economist and economic historian Charles Kindleberger has been one of the most prolific writers chronicling the world of finance, both past and present, since the times
of the most famous philosopher/economists. He has published on topics as specific as the economy of Germany during the last five years of World War II to the history
of the development of international financial practices. In "Mania, Panics and Crashes: A History of Financial Crises," Kindleberger takes the time
and energy to chronicle virtually every major financial crisis or panic that he has been able to discover. Originally published in 1978, he updated the book and it was
re-issued in December of 1996. Certainly he had plenty of additions to make! In 1978, Americans still believed in the solidity of savings and loan institutions, the 1980s
had not yet arrived with the message that "greed is good," and nobody thought the stock market could ever bottom out the way it did in 1987. The book
is both comforting and horrifying in terms that these sort of crises have happened throughout innumerable centuries and continue to do so! While
virtually all Americans are well-aware of the resultant mass hysteria of the 1929 crash on Wall Street, there has not been significant information presented on the phenomenon that occurs anywhere,
anytime financial crises occur. One need only read about the current financial problems of countries such as Indonesia or Korea to understand that panic and despair are the norm
