of "The Prince" with the perfect system of government that was essentially "evil." However, Machiavellis work was really intended to point out, symbolically and underhandedly, the result of evil that
is inherently possessed in mankind, especially as it relates to governing a country or any region. At the same time, however, he did present the reader with an understanding that
in order to use evil in government one must have a very strong and moral reason that would eventually come to a positive and moral outcome. The following paper examines,
for the most part, "The Prince" and Machiavellis perspectives of human nature as it relates to evil. "The Prince" and Evil First and foremost it is interesting and
informative to note that, Machiavelli, though often considered to be a very noble and honorable man, was seen as such a threat in his time that in many cases his
name is still used as an adjective for describing people as devious, deceitful, and self-serving. This is not the impression one gets from reading The Prince," for according to Oldham
it "becomes clear to the reader that Machiavelli is neither immoral nor advocating evil. His frank and candid observations on the appropriateness of the various political tactics demonstrate his concern
the ultimate goal or greater good." In essence, he is arguing, according to Oldham, that the end justifies the means and that any action which would perhaps be deemed evil
be conducted only during emergency situations and "only when the survival of the state requires such action" (Oldham). Like many philosophers and men of intellect, Machiavelli was a man
