at human beings as giving and intrinsically good. Some individuals see the good in people and expect honesty and integrity all of the time. They are shocked when they become
victims of crime or see a horrific event on the news. Others see terrible things happening as a part of life. It is a part of their worldview that sees
human nature as negative. These negative people also believe that strong laws are necessary to keep order and that people should be severely punished for their untoward acts. This is
very different from the free spirit, or enlightened, individual who sees man as a good being that deserves freedom and to be given the benefit of the doubt. In respect
to human nature, what did Confucius say? According to Ouyang Xiu (2007), he said very little: "Confucius instructions towards his student altogether amount to several thousand sayings and only once
human nature is mentioned." Yet, despite the fact that perhaps Confucius did not talk specifically about human nature, many of the things to come from the philosophy, and the discipline
to come from his words, do involve human nature. After all, his ideas were concerned with ethical thought. The ideas of Confucius are those often aligned with Eastern thought. Yao
& Yao (1998) write: "Here are yang and yin [two cosmic forces]: thus humans have their nature and feelings. The outward manifestation of human nature is to be found in
the virtue of jen, and that of human feeling in the quality of covetousness that derives from yin" (p.77). Authors add: " Both human nature and the laws of nature
