growth is that it is used in many different contexts. People grow emotionally, physically, spiritually, and so forth. In simple terms, growth is a progression from simpler to more complex.
The word develop or development also has a myriad of meanings but at its base, development is about improving by expanding, enlarging and/or refining. The acts and processes
of growth and development are interdependent. This is why we study them together. One is dependent upon the other. If a childs physical growth is impeded, it is likely that
his development will also be impeded. The Merck Manual explains that development is generally separated into different domains (Doyle, 2009). These include gross motor, fine motor, cognition, language and
social or emotional growth. These categories overlap and tables that depict what a child should be able to do at any specific age must be used with caution. As Doyle
(2009) points out a toddler may not be walking yet but he can speak in complete sentences. Development differs between children. Another difference between growth and development is that
growth in terms of physical growth typically stops by the time a person is 20-years-old but development may continue until death (Anonymous, 2009). Growth rates can always be measured metrically.
