reference to human goodness as a triumphant reality. In Louis De Bernieres novel "Captain Corellis Mandolin," however, we are presented with a very real and very harsh condition that
helps us to cheer for the power of human goodness that seems to come out of people in the worst of times. His is a tale of a war and
the good it somehow brings out in particular people. In the following paper we present an examination of the triumphant goodness of humans and human life as predominantly seen through
the characters of Weber and Mandras. Goodness of Human Life As mentioned, Bernieress novel is one that looks below the surface, so to speak, in illustrating the essential
goodness of human nature and its ability to continue in life. Throughout the book we are presented with such characters, perhaps most notably Iannis, who is essentially in the background
as a powerful influence throughout the entire book. With the characters of Weber and Mandras we have two young men who are essentially caught in the wrong place at the
wrong time. They are both victims of government and military involvement. As such they are men who find themselves in positions where they must do the unthinkable, or they find
themselves blindly doing something which would seem impossible to them prior to the war. With Mandras we have an innocent young man whose only thought is that which involves loving
a woman. Mandras loves Pelagia, who is a very intelligent young woman. Like her father she has a thirst for knowledge and much of her intelligence. According to one author,
