a book review and a consideration of Hughess thinking. Discussion The very first sentences of the book give a concise introduction to the subject, as well as a taste of
Hughess writing style, which is lucid and at times, very funny. He writes, "Technology is messy and complex. It is difficult to define and to understand. In its variety, it
is full of contradictions, laden with human folly, saved by occasional benign deeds, and rich with unintended consequences" (Hughes, 2004, p. 1). He goes on to observe that Americans today
equate technology with computers and the Internet, yet defining it in such a way is far too narrow (Hughes, 2004). World War II bombers and the flying buttresses on medieval
cathedrals are both examples of technology (Hughes, 2004). It is Hughess contention that unless we truly understand how varied and complex technology is, we will never be able to use
it to its full potential, which is to help us achieve a "wide variety of ends" (Hughes, 2004, p. 1). This will probably come as a shock to those who
see technology only in regard to scientific or computer-related pursuits. Hughes is absolutely correct: think of the word "technology" and the thing that probably springs to mind first is
a computer. This is only one part, and a very small segment, of the vast human enterprise that Hughes is referring to when he uses the word. This is Hughess
thesis: that we cannot truly understand technology and its impact if we continue to consider it only as a narrow range of products and systems that have been invented in
