Hugo Chavezs recent foray through the United States speaking at the U.N. General Assembly and various other engagements denouncing practically everything American,
has refreshed the memory of just how concerning Venezuela is not just from a U.S. perspective but from the perspective of its own internal welfare. Chavez is not one
to mince words. He variously refers to George Bush as a "devil" and an "alcoholic". He paints a picture of a sulfur fume following Bush where ever he
goes. Chavez criticizes the U.S. and gloats over his plans for Venezuela. Drama, however, is not what it takes to address Venezuelas problems. What is needed is
methodical and well rounded economic plan. Just as important is well defined political plans. Chavez has demonstrated time and time again that he does not have the ability
to deliver such plans. Indeed, the thesis might be presented that: the economic strategy
of Hugo Chavez will not, in the long run, enhance the general welfare of Venezuela.
The first point that should be presented to support this thesis is that there is considerable evidence that Chavezs plans have done nothing but lead his country into greater and
greater economic strife. Zuckerman (2006, 64) summarizes that the regions is currently not only beset by poverty but a glaring example of:
"the worlds most extreme inequality of wealth and power, unemployment, and rampant corruption".
