there are different versions of the operating software being used at different locations. It is highly likely that each of these operating system is representative of the time the machine
that the operating system is present on was obtained. The networking software also appears to be mainly, but not exclusively windows based, which may also indicate a preference to known
and existing systems that are already in place. The office in California has mainly Windows 95, this appears to be a relatively small network, without high demands being placed on
the functionality of the network. The same is true of the New Jersey operations where there are older versions of windows, such as 3.X in use. By comparison
the operating system at the Missouri office are more recent, here there are fifty machines with Windows 2K Pro. There are several potential reasons for the choice of this operating
system. The hardware itself is more recent and as such is capable of running a more demanding operating system which requires a high level of processing power (Tanenbaum, 2007). Another
clue to the use of Windows 2K pro here is the functions that are carried out. The machines are located across a
number of different departments including sales, accounting and human resources. These are areas where functionality associated with office procedures and records creation, updating and keeping at all important. With Windows
there is a high level of compatibility between the departments and the potential applications that may be used. For example, with the same operating systems there is increased ease for
the sales department to share sales data with the accounting department. The network allows the machines to connect with relevant servers through the token ring, including a Lotuis Notes server.
