idea that the quest for freedom is inborn and seems to be attached to certain people. In this story, Huck is living with the Widow Douglass so he can be
taught good manners, but when his father retrieves him and beats him, Huck runs away. He and a slave named Jim, run away together, and when they find a
raft, they float along the Mississippi. The boys are unintentionally split up, and Huck will go live with a family by the name of the Grangerfords for a little
while, but soon he is with Jim again and they run into a few unscrupulous individuals and are dragged into criminal activity. When Huck finally meets up with his friend,
Tom Sawyer, things are a mess, but Tom devises a way that all can return safely home. However, Huck is not so sure that he wants to go there. Unlike
Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz, Huck is not homesick. One could speculate that he just does not want to go back to the place where things were so bad.
Yet, another explanation might be that Huck had a taste of freedom and, at his young age, it was the only time that perhaps he had been allowed to do
exactly what he wanted. One can imagine that Huck achieved a sense of self-reliance and the trip had matured him to some extent. Still, it is that adventurous spirit that
is within man, and certainly within Huck, that allows him to pursue adventure with such fervor. A student writing on this subject might want to point out that not all
have this zest for living. Certainly, Tom is somewhat of the same mindset, but he wants to return home. There is something about going home for most travelers that is
