Hero If we are going to say that Huck Finn is the hero of the story, we need a clear picture of what a hero is or what a hero
does. Master storyteller, Joseph Campbell tells us that a hero is one who journeys outside of his own realm, has adventures, often dangerous ones, is assisted by friends on
his journey, gains riches in the form of personal knowledge and shares his knowledge with others until it is time to journey again. Huck Finn Triumph over adversity Huck has gotten
used to living with the Widow after his last adventures with Tom and has even attended school and "learned some" about reading, when pap, his father finds him, "When he
had got out on the shed he put his head in again, and cussed me for putting on frills and trying to be better than him; and when I reckoned
he was gone he come back and put his head in again, and told me to mind about that school, because he was going to lay for me and lick
me if I didnt drop that." His father does eventually catch him off guard. In time Huck does escape and fakes his own death. Beginning the journey
Huck has an idea of where he is going, but we as readers see that he does not always take the most direct route to arrive at a destination.
