Character Summary There are approximately 1/2 dozen major characters in Mark Twains Huckleberry Finn, and over a dozen characters that appear through out the story as a whole. The central character, the title character, Huckleberry Finn, is the narrator of the story, a teenage boy from a small town on the Mississippi River. Hucks childhood is less than perfect, and he often seeks familial ties and guidance from others, including his friends Tom Sawyer and Jim. Hucks father is known as "Pap," and is the town drunk. Pap finds it impossible to take care of Huck in any normal manner, and he leaves his childs upbringing in the hands of others. Pap represents all that is wrong in rural white society. Jim is a slave who is befriended by Huck, and Twain uses Jim to represent racial divisions and the inhumanity and humanity of society. Jim guides Huck, but there is an inequity in their relationship that extends from Jims identity as a runaway slave. Tom Sawyer is another friend of Hucks and Huck and Tom are often compared and contrasted. While Huck is intelligent and introspective, Tom is adventurous and imaginative. Tom is also a person who is much more conventional in his thinking than Huck, and so he becomes the character through which societal views are defined. Widow Douglas and Miss Watson are two sisters who have some wealth and share a home in St. Petersburg. Miss Watson is Jims owner (he was a house servant for Miss Watson), and she represents the predominant values ...
