the Mississippi River. Huck is simply seeking escape from his father and adventure while Jim is seeking Cairo where he heard he could locate people and become a free man.
They have many adventures upon the river as they generally float down on a raft they have constructed. The journey takes them from northern Missouri to southern Arkansas. The following
paper presents a literary map of their journey down the Mississippi River. Huck Finn and Jims Trip Down the Mississippi The
story essentially begins in St. Petersburg, Missouri which is right next to the Mississippi River and right across the river from Illinois. When Huck gets into a serious situation with
his father he fakes his own death and runs away. He figures that the best place to hide out is an island he often frequents: "All right; I can
stop anywhere I want to. Jacksons Island is good enough for me; I know that island pretty well, and nobody ever comes there. And then I can paddle over
to town nights, and slink around and pick up things I want. Jacksons Islands the place. (Twain Chapter VII). After a short period of time Jim arrives, surprising Huck,
and telling Huck his story. They both decide to simply hide out on the island together, fishing and getting what they can on the island until one day Huck travels
on the raft to get some food. He finds out that Jim is wanted for Hucks murder and that the town believes he is hiding out on the island. So
Huck returns to the island and they hurriedly pack their stuff and get on the raft and head downstream. In the beginning of this journey the reader sees how
