the interconnection between the two. The play was both engaging and artistic, and reflected the effort of the playwright to show that interactions can occur nonverbally that can influence
how relationships are perceived. The play integrated a range of artistic elements, including visual images of the Dublin ghetto, expressive writing, and choreographed fight scenes that enhanced the themes
in the play. Because of the use of artistic components that helped to support the theme, the play was highly entertaining, but required an acceptance of the fact that
the two main characters would never verbally interact. In the past, most of the films and plays Ive watched have always
required that two or more characters interact through dialogue. Though I know monologues are also common, Ive never watched dual monologues in a play in which the characters interacted
only in a physical sense. The performance was unique in that the two characters played off of each other through physical violence. The play gave a new perspective
on the way characters develop, how they express their knowledge of each other, how their histories are defined and how their interactions take place. The play also enhanced my
understanding of how physical elements, including setting and scenery, can be used to enhance a performance; the characters are placed in a ghetto setting that is very visual and includes
graffiti, old tires, barricade tape and physical representations of an alley in order to enhance the grittiness of the characters.
The play also helped me see that situations that are not always humorous can become funny through the dialogue, or in this case the dual monologues, that are present.
