Hughes, Jr. was born in December 1905 and died in April 1976 at age 70. He was a legend as well as a mystery throughout his lifetime. He was a millionaire several times over as soon as he inherited his fathers company when he was just 18 years old. His father hade invented and patented a rotary drill that had 166 cutting edges. This was the only drill that could penetrate thick rock and thus, Hughes, Sr. revolutionized oil drilling. Hughes, Sr. and a partner formed the Hughes Tool Company to lease the rotary bits to drilling companies. Following his death, analysts stated that at his death, Hughes suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder, paranoia, and perhaps some agoraphobia. It is also believed he had schizotypal personality disorder (Johns Hopkins University, 2010). He was reclusive and secretive throughout most of his life, as well as being shy and retiring. He was also flamboyant in some ways during his 20s, 30s and even into his 40s during which time, he dated numerous celebrities, including Jean Harlowe, Katherine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers Lana Turner and others (Aviation Pathfinders, 2010). Hughes was always afraid of germs. This is something he learned from his mother who was obsessed with keeping her son clean. His mother was so obsessed that she inspected his genitals every day and washed them over and over.
