reading, a historical novel is educational, which is why many teachers assign their grade school students novel reading in this genre. What is a historical novel exactly? It is defined
as follows: "Historical fiction may center on historical or on fictional characters, but usually represents an honest attempt based on considerable research (or at least serious reading) to tell a
story set in the historical past as understood by the authors contemporaries. Those historical settings may not stand up to the enhanced knowledge of later historians" ("Historical Novel," 2006). Clearly,
the fiction is at the forefront of the writing, but while the story is most important, authors do attempt to relay information that is historically accurate. That said, such works
will not be exactly truthful in every aspect of the text. There is room for error. Every facet of a story will not be completely accurate as even when
something is true, the author will presume that a conversation took place with a particular use of verbiage. In other words, even when an author does painstaking research, the end
result is a work of fiction because there is no precise record. When writing about early time periods, there would be no one alive to confirm conversations nor recording equipment
to verify accuracy. However, an author writing historic fiction must do a great deal of research in order to make sure that the setting is accurate and that the story
is correct as well. Attention to detail is very important when relaying information about important events in history. When writing historic fiction, authors must make a point of learning
