with an example the use of theory may be analysed. The example used is an essay by M Gullick, a student undertaking a law conversion course. This essay was the
winning entry in a contest run by the Times newspaper and an Essex court on 2002. Theoretically, this should be a prime example of a well written essay, in this
paper we will consider the argument that although this may be a good essay it does not follow all of the standard rules of essay writing. To look at
an essay and assess it we must first define what an essay should be before we can assess an example. An essay is a literary work that presents a set
of ideas, or arguments regarding a subject. It should be well structured, clear, fully referenced and presented in a professional fashion. The essay may be argument with a thesis, or
a discussion (Anonymous, 1998). A key element of any good essay will be content, with an element of original thinking and individual ideas, not limited to a regurgitation of the
ideas of others (Anonymous, 1998). To write an essay there are several stages that much be completed. The first stage is to decide on the topic of the essay.
For some subjects there may be a single question or essay topic, this may be approached from different angles. However, there will often be a great degree of latitude to
