from a different culture is not something that is simple or easy. In Gloria Anzalduas essay "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" the author illustrates just how complex living in
such a world can be. The following paper provides a general summary and discussion of what Anzalduas work entails. How to Tame a Wild Tongue First off it
is perhaps important to note that Anzaldua can speak many different languages and comes from a Hispanic home. She can actually, when put into categories, speak eight different languages that
she needs in different situations. She can speak working class, standard, and slang English as well as standard Spanish, North Mexican Spanish, Chicano Spanish, standard Mexican Spanish, Tex-Mex, and Pachuco.
Because of her culture and her time and place in that culture, she has to speak that many languages in order to survive. She has to learn how to tame
her own wild tongue, to speak what language is expected at any given time or place. Anzalduas essay tells us that as a child she grew up in a
Spanish household. However, she grew up in a time and place where if she spoke Spanish in school she was beat. And, if she spoke English at home she was
considered to be bad, considered to be an arrogant young girl who betrayed her people by speaking the language of the oppressors. Through all of her struggles she illustrates
that in the taming of this wild tongue she can speak many languages but yet she did not feel empowered at all because she was at the mercy of whatever
group she was in, in relationship to how she would speak. She was pressured to know these languages in order to survive. She does, however, indicate that the language she
