This paper contains a few hints about how to succeed in this environment. Discussion The first thing a student notices is that nobody is looking over his shoulder forcing him to work. This is a huge problem for a lot of people, who are not self-starters and who need that supervision to perform well. They have to learn how to motivate themselves. One thing of importance is budgeting time properly. A student can expect to study "about 2 to 3 hours per week outside class for each unit of credit" (Bennett, 2000). This means that a student taking 15 hours will study approximately 30 to 45 hours per week (Bennett, 2000). "Combined with time in class, this works out to a total of 45 to 60 hours spent on academic work - not much more than the time required of a typical job, and you get to choose your own hours" (Bennett, 2000). It often seems like its much more difficult to study than it would be to work, and it may be, because of the fact that a student faces exams, papers and other measures of accomplishment that do not apply to employees. However, that will be offset, one hopes, by the pleasure of learning about a subject of interest. Other hints for doing well in school include the following: Dont miss class (Bennett, 2000).
