they are an alcoholic or not, the urge or need to quit drinking is often a serious concern for many. The following paper examines 12 step programs for quitting drinking.
The paper discusses the steps to the process. How to Quit Drinking: 12 Step Program There are many 12 step programs and they all, as would be assumed,
work off of 12 steps, steps that were first developed by the individuals who started Alcoholics Anonymous (Gilley, 2009). They are essentially steps that outline a plan. The first
step is as follows: "We admitted we were powerless over our addiction - that our lives had become unmanageable" (12step.org, 2009). This is a step that first clearly sets to
recognize that there is a problem and that the individual is out of control. This denotes believing in something bigger than oneself, understanding that power is unobtainable by the individual
over their drinking. Step 2 is: "Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity" (12step.org, 2009). This is clearly claiming a faith in
a higher being. So the individual essentially realizes they have no power over their drinking and then accepts that there is a power greater than their own which leads to
the third step which places the individuals life in the hands of God (12step.org, 2009). The drinker gives control of their life to God after realizing they cannot control their
problem and realizes that there is a God. After these three steps are dealt with comes the personal commitment to delving into
ones issues and problems. Step 4 states, "Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves" and step 5 involves the following: "Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another
