can organizations protect workers from violence? Protecting workers may in fact requisite procedures to try to prevent violence such as recognizing problem employees and implementing policies that make use
of greater security. Security does seem to be a good idea, but there are sometimes drawbacks to implementing something as simple as that. Armour (2001) claims that some laid
off employees may react poorly to increased security measures, so the effort may backfire. At the same time, it might be a comfort to have security measures in place so
that strangers cannot wander into office buildings. Security is perhaps the first line of protection for anyone who works for an organization. Another idea is that employees should be
confronted if they are acting oddly or have shown violence in the past. Certainly, if an employee has a criminal record or is arrested while working for a company, steps
should be taken to either confront him or find out more about the problem to make sure that coworkers are protected. In the case of Michael Rahmer, for example,
his attorney argued that the employer should have ordered him into counseling as he had been violent in the workplace before (Armour, 2004). Of course, some may think that such
legal tactics go too far. After all, a violent workplace offender should be responsible for his own actions. At the same time, employers do have the power to make sure
that their employees are handling things well and they have the responsibility to their employees to make sure that violent people are not nearby. Lublin (2002) notes that background
