process of making change, using the principles set forth by Kotter and Cohen in their book The Heart of Change. It is the only additional source. Discussion The book actually
describes how to create change in organizations, but the prompt for this paper is to identify an "actionable, tangible problem, idea, concern, desire, dream, goal or accomplishment around which a
model of change can be develop"; in other words, the paper applies business principles to the process of personal change. The first thing
to consider is what actionable concern might be interesting, and losing weight comes to mind. This seems to be a good choice for many reasons: more people than ever before
are overweight and unhealthy; obesity causes many other health problems, which then overtax the already staggering health care system; overweight and obese people often have psychological problems, specifically low self-esteem
and feelings of worthlessness; and people diet all the time, only to gain the weight back. All of these considerations suggest this is a good topic. Also, for clarity and
the sake of the essay, lets assume that the person wants to make a change but cannot get started. This is not someone who has to be dragged kicking and
screaming toward the goal. That said, here are the eight steps and how they could apply in this personal scenario. Step 1: Create
a sense of urgency about the problem and reduce the "complacency, fear, and anger that prevent change from starting" (Kotter and Cohen, 2002, p. v). It is unlikely that the
overweight person is complacent. Rather, he or she is probably constantly aware of and ashamed of their appearance. But they are also angry that they have "let themselves go" like
