The viewer wants to like them and to root for them to fall in love, but the falsity of the premise of the film turns these two very likeable people into schmucks that the viewer wants to drop-kick rather than become emotionally involved in their juvenile tale. The premise is that Ben works in an ad agency and Andie works for a magazine that is obviously Cosmopolitan, but spelled a little different. Andie pitches an idea to her editor about the mistakes that can drive a guy away within 10 days--guaranteed. Ben, likewise, pitches an idea to his boss that he can get a woman to fall in love with him within 10 days--guaranteed--as a means of showing his understanding of the female sex, which qualifies him to handle a large jewelry advertising account. This premise has the couple acting in peculiar ways. As Roger Ebert points out in his review, "Characters are nice when they want to be mean, or mean when they want to be nice." This makes it hard for the audience to sympathize with these characters who are misleading each other, denying their true feelings and causing each other pain (Ebert, 2003). It is suppose to be funny, but it winds up just being painful, sad, and unpleasant to watch. Since Andies goal is to drive Ben away, she deliberately creates scenes that would drive any normal man away in a heartbeat, such as allowing her obnoxious miniature dog to urinate on Bens pool table. She acts clingy and cutesy and indulges in such antics as give his penis the nickname of "Princess Sophia." She even does the unthinkable sacrilege, from a male point of view, of putting a plate of sandwiches down on top ...
